We Donated Nearly 2K to Slow Money SLO
Community-owned grocery store gives back to local nonprofit in full-circle moment, chooses SLO Food Bank as May-June beneficiary
SLO FOOD CO-OP (Monday, May 10, 2021 ) —SLO’s community-owned grocery store is proud to have donated a total of $1,932 to early backer Slow Money SLO this month as part of its popular 2% Tuesdays program. The money was raised by Co-op shoppers and donated by the Co-op for the months of March through April. The funds will now go toward Slow Money SLO’s mission to guide, support and fund local food businesses in SLO County.
Designed to give back 2% of each Tuesday’s total sales to a worthy local nonprofit, the 2% Tuesday program has allowed the Co-op to donate more than $5,685.55 to San Luis Obispo County area nonprofits last year alone. 2021 has already proven to bring in even more excitement, as public participation heats up.
In the spirit of giving, Slow Money SLO has pledged to “pay it forward,” to the Co-op’s 2% Tuesdays recipient for May and June, SLO Food Bank, by donating a portion of their received donations.
“SLO Food Bank has been a really great neighbor to us in recent years, and it is only right that we support them as our next beneficiary,” said SLO Food Co-op Communications Coordinator Kasey Main. “Local food is our passion, and supporting SLO Food Bank in alleviating hunger throughout SLO County will really energize our shoppers to show up in record numbers each and every Tuesday.”
The latest 2% Tuesday check totaling nearly $2,000 was presented to Slow Money SLO Founder and Executive Director Jeff Wade earlier this week by Main and SLO Food Co-op General Manager Zack Sheppard. It was a full circle moment for both the nonprofit and community-owned grocery store.
In 2012, founding members of Slow Money SLO came together to support the SLO Food Co-op and its need to move into a newer, larger location on Victoria Avenue in SLO. Volunteers also helped greatly in the growth of SLO Food Co-op over the past eight years.
“SLO Food Co-op was our first local food support project and we are extremely pleased at how they have grown over the years,” Wade said. “The Co-op is an incredible advocate for local food, offering one of the widest selections of produced, prepared and grown food and beverages from local, small enterprises. The cooperative model and their service to the community is inspiring and we look forward to continuing our partnership to grow awareness on the importance of local food consumption."
